The second I saw Newt, I thought of the little girl, in the movie "Aliens", the one from 1986. She was called that by her brother, because she was really smart, but her name was Rebecca Jorden.
But without that above reason in mind, I'll say that it's great for a girl. More so than for a male, even if it technically that, a male name. Can't really name the reason as to why, it just is.
Btw... The girls last name, Jorden, is the Danish name for "the Earth".

"Aliens" was the first thing I thought of as well
Unfortunately, like Isla, the next was Newt ("n-Ewwwwww-t") Gingrinch.
However, I liked Newt the little girl in Aliens. Seems nearly as good a cultural reference as Scout, to me.
