It's not just a name that E.B. White made up. It really does have something to do with spiders. I had a picture book about a spider when I was little and it was called "Aranea."
So I wouldn't think it was a good name for a person.

I like it. People give their pets human names - why not let it be the other way around?

It's not the name of one or two specific spiders, it's a scientific term. It would be like naming a dog Homosapiens, or a person Ursus or Ornithorhynchus.
