Help[Opinions] Baskerville?
Baskerville is a family name that we have considered using for our son's middle name. What do you think? Too much? Too pretentious? Please be honest with your opinions. Thanks.

There's a newscaster in my hometown who has the last name Baskerville. I've always loved the sound of it. You should totally use it as a mn because that'd be really nice.

It is a family name--not inspired by book title!
I realize that it is making many of you think of the book title, but I do want to point out that it is a family name.

We're aware of that, but it won't take out the book title reference from people's minds, because it's just too obvious.

Are actually going to know the middle name of the child? Does it matter if there's a book association with a middle name?

Nope - as I said in my post, I think the fact that it's a family name, and being used in the middle name spot means that it's fair game.
I was merely agreeing that just because it's a family name doesn't mean it doesn't also have an automatic association with the book, as well.

It's okay as a middle name, particularly because it's a family name. I don't think it's too prententious, but it's in the style of names I like.
The only negative I can see with it is the association with "Hound of the Baskervilles." There are worse references than Sherlock Holmes, I think.

Where I live, it is a HUGE trend to give your first born son either the maiden name of the mother as the mn, or the father's fn as the boy's mn... so sounds very natural to me just because of current trends here.

Hound and Holmes
I don't think it's pretentious or too much, but my first thought upon seeing it is the novel, Hound of the Baskervilles. Which isn't a bad association to have, especially if you're a Holmes fan. And perhaps no one else would get the connection.
Anyway, in the middle name spot, I don't foresee a problem.

It does sound pretentious, but in the MN slot, and honoring family, you can't go wrong.

I think you can get away with just about anything in the middle name spot, because the child doesn't have to use it or admit to it if it's something that doesn't appeal to their tastes.
Baskerville is a pretty loaded name though, given its place in classic literature. I'd see it as sitting better as a third name. John Michael Baskerville Surname or something like that (John and Michael pulled out of thin air).

It's not pretentious to use a family surname as a middle name. I rather like Baskerville actually. What would be the first name?

The current frontrunner for first name is Peter. We are also considering Jeffries as a middle name (another family surname). Do you think the repetitive -er sound in Peter Baskerville is problematic? I should have mentioned that last name is two syllables.
