It's still up in the air, since really Gianna and Gianni are diminutives for Giovanna and Giovanni, names that neither my husband or I like. I think that Gianni is a little more unique, but I also worry that it takes away from the namesake a little. My father's nickname as a small child was "Johnny," so I have that sound in my head... "Johnny Albert." At the same time, I don't want to veer too far from the child's real name.
My daughter Charlotte was "Charlie" when she was very little, but it never stuck. There's a chance that the nickname for this one won't stick, either. After all, I've never been a "Becky." NEVER.
