By coincidence, I just read
Assassin's Quest, the book where this character appears, over
Christmas. I wonder if the parents of this child read the book.
In the book it's explained that the positive medicinal properties of nettles are what the mother was thinking of in bestowing the name on her child, if I remember correctly. So to the mother, nettles were much more than "stinging weeds". And some varieties of nettle do have pretty flowers:
