I'm in love with Isla. WDYT? Does it go well with Leonie? I think Scottish island names rock, but is Isla getting too popular? I'd never use an overly-popular name. I really love the sound, and I know that it's barely heard of as a name where I live. Do you know anyone called Isla? What kind of person do you picture a girl called Isla to be? Do you like the name?

I love Isla, but then I'm biased since I have an unfaltering love of Scottish names lol. Unfortunately it is really popular in Scotland (14th most popular girls name) and I know 2 Islas very well and about another 10 through people I know.

I think at the moment it's only popular with the higher circles of London over hear, i'm saying that because i see it quite alot in the Birth Announcements of the Times

You know, Isla sounds pretty, but there's something missing. How can I put my finger on it? It kind of sounds like Maya or Lila... a lot of people love these names but to me they are nothing but pretty sounds and aren't memorable at all.
But when I first heard of the name, I sort of liked it and even put in on my PNL. But then I removed it. I'm just not sure it has staying power.
Oh and I feel sort of dumb because I discovered the name through Nymbler (I typed in Ione) and Isla came up, and I assumed it was pronounced IS-la not getting the Island connection at all. It does have that EYE start that I seem to like, which makes it more interesting than Lila in my opinion. And while I do see this becoming one of those overnight top names, like Ava, the advantage to that is fewer people will mispronounce Isla.
I picture a girl with long dark hair, and a sort of demure personality.
I don’t think Isla goes with Leonie as a middle name, but I think Isla and Leonie are fine for sisters. But if you are calling out both names in anger, you may get tonge tied over the L's.

It's funny, because it used to be one of those quirky, unusual names that "belonged" to one of the regular posters (in this case, the one who uses it as a posting name), but it seems to be coming up more and more these days? I wonder if actress Isla Fisher's got something to do with it?
Anyway, it's an ok name, though not really my style. But I'm always tempted to pronounce it like the Spanish word for "island".

I think Isla is really pretty, and I think it goes fine with Leonie. Those would be adorable names for sisters. I've never met anyone named Isla, but it is starting to catch on in the US because it's never been ranked and last year was in the 600s! I picture an Isla to be a friendly, smart, musical girl with brown hair.

Isla isn't popular yet, but it is trendy. Any name that comes out of nowhere to land at 623 in the stats is a name that's on many people's minds. There are a lot of things about Isla that make me think it's on the verge of becoming overly popular. It's a "bell tone" name that fits right in with Miley, Tayla, and the rest, it has a celebrity reference, and it's part of the Irish/Scottish name trend.
Anywhere name loving people gather to talk about names, Isla has a lot of fans. I don't get it because I don't find it attractive.

I find it attractive; it's just that it's too popular on these boards. I would probably like it if I'd never heard it before or rarely heard it but it gets brought up all the time...it's overkill.

I don't think that Isla's a trendy name. It's getting popular, but that doesn't mean it's trendy. Trendy names are usually meaningless, modern inventions, but Isla has been used in Scotland for (at least) the past two centuries. And the name itself is alot older than that. Aurora and Evangeline are getting popular as well, but I wouldn't call them trendy.

Hmm. I think we differ on the definition of trendy, then. I would absolutely call Evangeline and Isla trendy. I consider trendy names to be names that experience a sudden rise in popularity because they fit in with a trend. Noah, Isaiah, and Elijah are trendy names, for example, without being made up or modern.
To me, meaningless, modern inventions, such as Ayla, Brylie, Jayden, and the like, are more "tryndie" than trendy.

I think Isla is a beautiful name! I had considered using it for my daughter, but I was concerned that it's getting too popluar. Here in the US I haven't actually met anyone (of any age) named Isla, but it's been talked about a lot. I imagine that in a few years the birth records will be littered with Isla's.
