[Opinions] Odd Pronunciation of Leila
I was watching TV yesterday about unusual roadside attractions. There was a woman (late 50's, early 60's) named Leila. She pronounced her name lee-EYE-la. That's certainly odd (at least it is to me).Have any of you ever heard of that pronunciation? Also, in my local obits there was a woman who died at the age of 83 named Leila. I had always understood the name to be pronounced LAY-la or even LEE-la so now I'm wondering how she pronounced her name as well.I love Leila and this is my main problem with it.

That is odd. I certainly have never heard it before. I have also heard Leila pronounced LY-la though. I never know which way to pronounce it either.

I hadn't heard Leila pronounced lee-EYE-la before. I'm not too keen on it. LEE-la, LIE-la, and LAY-la are prettier. From my experience, most people named Leila pronounce it LEE-la (rhyming with Sheila), but since a decent number of people also pronounce it LIE-la or LAY-la, it can get confusing.

lee-EYE-la is odd to me too. I've never encountered that pronunciation before. Whether it's spelled Leila, Laila, Layla, Leyla, or Leilah, I always pronounce it LAY-la. It's a pretty name, but I think anyone who uses it needs to be prepared to correct people who pronounce it differently.
