I've noticed how Irish first names, at least the modern Irish spellings of them, get changed slightly when used as (Anglicized) surnames. Thus:
Conor O'Connor
Brian O'Brien
Lachlan McLaughlin (OK, that's Scottish. Same principle.)
Dermot McDermott
Calum McCallum (Again, Scottish)
The surname spelling then becomes the basis for a "new" spelling of the first name. I don't like the trend. It feels uneducated to me. I'd much rather see
Cormac used as the first name spelling. (Discolsure:
Cormac is a top four boy's name for me so I'm very protective of it.)
