The bride is African American. I do speak other languages and can see how you get Calais out of Kale, but it's still instinctively wrong. If I was watching a show in Spanish and saw a Kale and heard Calais, it would make more sense because it's the Spanish writing system, not the English one.

What state did the African American grow up in? Or where was she born? Is it possible she was conceived in Hw? Some African languages also have similar vowel patterns in their phonetic systems. Hawaiians have a lot of mixed ethnicities... Plus, if someone encountered a name on someone and liked it, that could account for a name winding up on an unexpected person. I know of a blond-haired, blue-eyed Aiko because her parents are American, but she was born in Japan. There's more to a person's culture than the colour of his/her skin. Thus, if it's at least a real name that CAN be spelt that way, it's not worth making a big deal out of imo.
