An article in the papers announced the death at 58 of one Edward Cuthbert, 3rd Earl of Oakheart: a respected veteran and devoted father, he will be succeeded in the title by his eldest son, Ned. Thankfully, the illness that claimed the elder Lord Cuthbert’s life did no harm to the rest of his family, including Ned and Octavia’s younger two children, a brother and a sister for the quiet, serious Ralph. Lord Cuthbert died believing his daughter would never be persuaded to marry; however, only months after his passing she was wed to an older man, a Professor of Classics at Cambridge.
