Mortimer isn't gloomy at all. It's rather goofy if anything! I really like this name and I would be over the moon to meet a small Mortimer.
You could also use Morrie as a nickname, that's pretty cute.

Yes! That’s what I was thinking, a little Mortimer would be so sweet!
I do really like Morrie, more than Morty certainly. I also like Mo :)
