I think it's a beautiful name. However, here in the US it is considered a "black name" and is virtually never used on white girls. It's also fairly dated, as a lot of those names tend to date quickly.

It's a black wood, after all! As a matter of interest, is Ivory ever used as a name, and if so, is it limited to white girls? I've never seen either of them used in South Africa.

Usually for girls, apparently. The only one I knew was a black guy. It's also a not-that-rare last name, sometimes also spelled Ivery. I think the guy I knew might have been Ivery.
