I think
Linden would work well on a boy since this isn't a name that I particularly think 'belongs' more to one sex than the other, at least as far as its sound or my own associations are concerned.
Lyndon reminds me of LBJ, too, which isn't the
worst thing, but it's not something I'd really strive for. :-/ And if it bothers you, that's a pretty good reason to avoid it. I say go with
Linden if it's what you like because I agree that it being uncommon makes it fairly versatile.
