I've always kind of liked the name Ethel. It's my grandmother's name, so I've thought about using it for one of my daughters. But my grandmother hates it. :-)

BerthaI love Bertha said BER-ta. So really... Berta, probably. :-) I'd totally name a hypothetical child Roberta called Berta, if she was receptive to the nickname.

I like Ethel but I don't see hope for Bertha. The name has gained many associations and pop-culture connotations with mean overweight women. This is rather, sad, I think.
I've also noticed that people stay away from "tha" endings.:)
