Meaning & History

An island and traditional county at the northwestern extremity of northern Wales. It is separated from Caernarfonshire on the mainland by a narrow stretch of water called the Menai Strait. Meaning uncertain, it may be derived from Old Norse, either Ǫngullsey meaning "Hook Island" or Ǫnglisey meaning "Ǫngli's Island".
