Anticosti is an island in the Minganie Regional County Municipality Canada. Originally inhabited by natives , The Innu called it Notiskuan which means "where bears are hunted", and the Mi'kmaq called it Natigôsteg meaning "forward land".
The French explorer J. Cartier found it in 1534.He originally called it Isle de l'Assomption.Anticostis name probably came from the Indian word naticosti meaning “where bears are hunted.”
