Meaning & History
From Latin Batavia, itself from Proto-Germanic Batawjō meaning "good island", derived from bataz meaning "good" and awjō meaning "island". This is the name of a historical and geographical region located in what is now the Netherlands. It was also the name used for the Indonesian city of Jakarta during the colonial (Dutch) era.In Dutch the name refers only to the Indonesian city, while the region is called Betuwe.
