From Turkish Çerkes or Russian Черкес (Cherkes) referring to the Circassian (Adyghe) people. The exonyms are of uncertain meaning; they may be derived from Kerkety, the name of a Circassian tribe, or from Persian چهار کس (čahâr kas) meaning "four people" (probably denoting four tribes). This is the name of a historical region in the North CAUCASUS.
