Derived from a a Latinization of the name Cherkess (spelled as Çerkes in modern Turkish), which is the Turkic name for the Adyghe people, the indigenous people that inhabited the area. Circassia was a region in the Caucasus, bordering the Black Sea. Today, it is split into the Russian republics of Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, parts of Ossetia, and the Krasnodar and Stavropol Krais.
