Meaning & History

Estevan was named in 1892 after George Stephen, the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). The name is believed to be derived from a contraction of his first and last name: "Este" (from Stephen) and "van" (a variation of his surname's pronunciation). Alternatively, the name may also have Spanish origins, as "Esteban" is the Spanish form of Stephen.
