From the Old Norse finn(ar) (the Old Norse same of the Sami), and mǫrk meaning "woodland, borderland, or march/mark."

Finnmark was a fylke (county) in Norway.

On 1 January 2020, Finnmark merged with Troms to form Troms og Finnmark fylke.
