Meaning & History

From Spanish fuerte "strong" and ventura "fortune", though an alternative theory is that the name is derived form the Roman name for the Canary Islands, Fortunatae Insulae "fortunate islands". Fuerteventura is an island in the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, near the coast of northwestern Africa.
