Meaning & History

From the name of a Scottish village, chiefly distinguished for its castle (allegedly haunted, with a history going back to 1211), the meaning of which is uncertain. Earlier it may have been Fycyn or Fywin, according to one source from the Gaelic flodh abhuinn “wilderness by the river”. As a place name it occurs in the Scottish folk song 'The Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie', about the thwarted romance between a soldier and a girl.
