Meaning & History
Derived from Ancient Greek Καλλίπολις (Kallípolis) meaning "beautiful city", composed of κάλλος (kallos) "beauty" and πόλις (polis) "city". This is the name of a town in Apulia, Italy, as well as a town (also Gelipolu) in Çanakkale, Turkey, from which the Gallipoli Peninsula derives its name.
