Meaning & History
The kingdom belonging to Pant (Ban), Lancelot’s father, in Ulrich’s Lanzelet. He married Clarine, the mother of Lancelot in a Germanic version of the latter’s story.
Although identification with Gwynedd in Wales and Guenet in Brittany have been suggested, it is most likely a variation of Benoic (Benwick), Ban’s traditional kingdom in other Lancelot stories. It may have influenced Der Pleier’s Gamvis (Ganves).
