Meaning & History

Grande Prairie takes its name from the large open prairie surrounding the area. The term grande comes from French, used by early French-speaking fur traders in the region. The area was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including the Dane-zaa (Beaver) Nation. Grande Prairie is located in northwestern Alberta, Canada.
