From the name of a Germanic tribe originally called Chatti, later Chassi, and from the 8th century called Hassi or Hessi. Hesse is a state in Germany. Possibly derived from Old Germanic *hatjaną "to hunt down, pursue; to rush, incite, attack", or from *hattuz "hat, head covering".
