Derived from the name Kalmyk, denoting the native people who originally inhabited the area. The Mongolian name, Халимаг (Khalimag), means "the people moving away"; ultimately from Mongolian халих (khalikh) meaning "overflow, leakage, seepage, overpour", referring to how the Kalmyk people were originally Mongolians who "leaked away" from their ancestral homeland. The word Kalmyk is actually derived from Turkic (ultimately from Ottoman Turkish قالمق (kalmak)) meaning "to halt, cease moving, remnant, to remain". Kalmykia is a federal subject of Russia located in the Caucasus.
