Meaning & History
From Russian Карелия (Kareliya), which is from Karelian and Finnish Karjala derived from Finnish karja meaning "cattle, livestock" combined with the suffix -la denoting location. This is the name of a region in northern Europe as well as a federal subject of Russia. In Norwegian, this name only refers to the Russian republic (see Karelen for the Norwegian name for the region).
