Meaning & History
Derived from the Celtic lin meaning "lake" or "pool", referring to the tidal pool on the River Ouse. It became known at Bishop's Lynn in the 12th Century, when Bishop Herbert de Losinga of Thetford began the first Medieval town there. However, in the 16th Century, after the Dissolution of the Monastriesby Henry VIII, its name was changed to Lynn Regis "King's Lynn".
