Meaning & History
From the name of the mountain Kiirunavaara, composed of Finnish kiiruna "ptarmigan" and vaara "large forested hill" (from Northern Sami várri "mountain"). Kiruna is the northernmost town in Sweden known for the Kiruna Mine, the largest and most modern underground iron ore mine in the world, and Esrange Space Center, a rocket range and research centre.
