Meaning & History
Originally named Berlin due to its predominantly German population in the 19th century. The name was changed to Kitchener in 1916 during World War I, following anti-German sentiment in Canada. Named after Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, a British military officer and statesman. The region was settled in the early 1800s by German Mennonites from Pennsylvania.Kitchener forms part of the Kitchener-Waterloo metropolitan area.
