Meaning & History
Lloydminster was named after George Lloyd, an Anglican priest and settlement leader. It was founded in 1903 as a temperance colony by British settlers. The suffix "-minster" is derived from the Old English word for a church or monastery, often used in British place names. Originally part of the Northwest Territories, the town was split in 1905 when Alberta and Saskatchewan became provinces, with portions of Lloydminster falling into each province. The name is used for a city on the border of Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada.
