Meaning & History

Named after London, England, by John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. He envisioned the area as the capital of Upper Canada. The name derives from the English city London, which itself has ancient roots in the Roman name Londinium.

London, Ontario, is located in southwestern Ontario, along the Thames River, which Simcoe also named after the river in England.
