Meaning & History

From the name of the Malay people, meaning uncertain (see Malaysia).

This term is most commonly used to refer to the Malay Peninsula in various contexts, including the southern part of the peninsula and surrounding islands (also known as western Malaysia). Historically it was also the name of three political entities: the colony of British Malaya (1826-1957) and its successors the Malayan Union (1946-1948) and the Federation of Malaya (1948-1963).
