Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain, perhaps derived from Sanskrit मातरम् (mataram) meaning "mother" or "motherland". Other theories include माता (mata) meaning "mother" or मत्त (mata) meaning "joy, excitement, passion" combined with आराम (arama) meaning "pleasure, delight".

This is the name of a city on the Indonesian island of Lombok. Historically, it was also the name of two kingdoms based on the island of Java; the first, called the Mataram (or Medang) Kingdom, existed between the 8th and 11th centuries while the second, the Mataram Sultanate, reigned from the 16th to 18th centuries.
