Meaning & History

From Late Latin Mediterraneum, a compound of medius "middle" and terra "land, earth". This is the name of the sea between Europe, Africa and Asia. It was not used by the classical Romans, who instead called it Mare Magnum "great sea" or Mare Nostrum "our sea".
