Meaning & History
This is the name of a 6th century BC Phocaean Greek colony, near what is now Monaco. The name is made up from Greek words monos (μόνος) meaning "alone, single" and oikos (οἶκος) meaning "house," which results in the meaning of Monoikos as "single house."The name first came about when a temple was constructed in the colony after, according to an ancient myth, Hercules came to the area and turned away the previous gods. Being that it was the only temple in the area, named the temple of "Hercules Monoikos," the city became known as Monoikos.
