Meaning & History
The name New Glasgow was given to several settlements by Scottish settlers in the 18th century in honor of Glasgow, Scotland, one of the major cities in the country. "New" simply signifies that it was a newer settlement, and "Glasgow" reflects the influence of Scottish colonization and the naming traditions of settlers. Glasgow itself comes from Celtic, meaning "green hollow" (from "glas", meaning green or gray, and "cow", meaning hollow or valley).
