Meaning & History

An ancient Egyptian city built by Ramesses II (the Great) around 1270 BCE. It served as the capital during Egypt’s 19th Dynasty and was located in the eastern Nile Delta. Derived from Egyptian "Per Ramessu" (pr-ỉ͗-ms-sw), meaning "House of Ramesses."
