Meaning & History
Rothesay, New Brunswick, was named after Rothesay, Scotland, a town on the Isle of Bute. The name Rothesay is of Scottish Gaelic origin, possibly derived from Rothesige or Roth Say, meaning "King’s Seat" or "Fort Isle" (roth = "fort," say = "isle"). The name was chosen to reflect British nobility, as the Duke of Rothesay is a traditional title for the heir to the Scottish throne, now held by the Prince of Wales.
