From a Portuguese corruption of the name Sambawa, which is most likely derived from Sanskrit शम्भु (shambhu) meaning "beneficent, benevolent" (also a name for the Hindu god Shiva). This is the name of an island in Indonesia as well as a regency of the Indonesian province of West Nusa Tenggara.
