Meaning & History
The name Surrey originates from the Old English "Sūþrige," meaning "southern district" or "southern region," derived from sūþ ("south") and rige ("region"). Surrey, British Columbia, was named after Surrey, England, by an early settler who thought the view of the Fraser River reminded him of the Thames in England. Established as a municipality in 1879 and officially became a city in 1993.Surrey is the second-largest city in British Columbia by population and is part of the Metro Vancouver area.
