Meaning & History

From a Hebrew translation of Altneuland (known as The Old New Land in English), the title of a 1902 novel by journalist Theodor Herzl. It is comprised of the Hebrew words תל (tel) meaning "hill", representing the "Old", and אביב ('aviv) meaning "spring (the season)", which symbolizes the "New".

This is the name of an administrative district and city in Israel. The city's official name is Tel Aviv-Yafo — it was merged with the city of Yafo (Jaffa) in 1950 — but is often simply referred to as Tel Aviv.
