Meaning & History
Means "beyond the forest", derived from Latin trans meaning "across, beyond" combined with medieval Latin sylvam, which is the accusative singular of the medieval Latin noun sylva meaning "forest, woods" (see Silvius). Also compare the medieval Latin adjective sylvanus meaning "sylvan, of the forest" (see Silvanus). This is the name of a historical region in central Romania. Most people today heavily associate the region with Dracula and vampires, which is due to the fact that the Irish author Bram Stoker (1847-1912) used the region as a setting for his 1897 novel Dracula.
