Composed of the Māori words ure meaning "penis" and wera meaning "burnt". The name of Te Urewera in Aotearoa New Zealand: the ancestral homeland of the Tūhoe people.

The name is allegedly the result of a chief rolling into a fire in his sleep.

Te Urewera is also legally recoginsed as a person under New Zealand law.
