Meaning & History

Yorkton was named in 1882 by members of the York Farmers' Colonization Company, a group of settlers from Toronto (then called York). The name "York" honors York, England, and follows a common British colonial tradition of naming places after locations in the United Kingdom. The suffix "-ton" is an Old English term meaning "town" or "settlement".
