Lol. I can understand how someone from a country like
America would feel that way: but bear in mind that the US population is more than ten times bigger than Australia's population (298 million vs 20 million). Because we're smaller, we have less crime, and dramatic crimes (and this one was dramatic, divisive and traumatic to the nation's consciousness) linger in the national memory for much longer.
Even 26 years on and after it's become completely clear that little
Azaria was killed by a dingo, it's still a hot topic. And it is still very divisive - some peoples' prejudices still don't allow them to exonerate
Lindy Chamberlain.
Azaria would be usable in the US, I'm sure, but it would be a cruel thing to do to an Australian child.
