From Latin Abissinus meaning "Abyssinian, Ethiopian", ultimately derived from Arabic الحبشة (al-Habashah) of uncertain meaning. This is the name of a region and former empire in the Horn of Africa, consisting of present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea.
