Meaning & History

From Old High German Ali-saz or Elisaz, meaning "foreign domain". Alternatively, from Germanic Ell-sass, meaning "seated on the Ill", a river in Alsace.

Alsace was the easternmost region in France, and was combined with the former regions of Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine to create Grand Est, which was provisionally known as Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine.
