Meaning & History
The name of an ancient Armenian city founded in the 8th century BC, which became the capital of the Kingdom of Armenia in 331 BC under the Orontid dynasty. In modern times the name is also borne by a nearby town (which was renamed Armavir in 1992 after the historic city) and province, as well as another city and administrative division in Russia.
